Pallet Company FIre Causes Mutual Aid Call Posted by: Kent Gilbert on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 - 06:04 AM
| AT 7:51 PM Tuesday a rapidly spreading fire was reported at the Hastings Pallet Company in an outside storage area. Fire Fighters arrived to find flames 50-60'tall licking at neighboring buildings. The fire was intense and gave off a tremendous amount of radiant heat. It melted windows on neighboring building and caused the brick to spall on the buildings in several places.
On arrival Capt Clark and Engine 2 set up heavy streams to attack the fire fromn the west a 2 1/2" line was advanced to provide a cover spray on the building.
Engine 3's and Lt Vorderstrasse began an attack on the south with a ground set monitor and then advanced lines into the building. The found minor extension in the building and placed hand lines inside for protection.
An early call was placed for additonal help as early as the first encode. All units answered up quickly and a call for a backup crew was made immediately. On arrival Chief Gilbert requested mutual aid from BLue Hill, Juniata, Hastings Rural and Doniphan. Red Cloud Fire fighters heard the call up and also responded.
The fire was impacting against a large abandoned factory known as Marshalltown
Instruments. It melted windows there but additional lines were placed to protect it. This fire had the potential to rapidly spread and involve several buildings at one time. A strong north wind increased the risk.
There were no fire fighters injured. A twenty pound propane bottle was found in the center of the burned area. Forunately it did not create a BLEVE (boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion).
An area of pallets appxomatley 50' by 75' and 12 feet tall were consumed in a short amount of time.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
