Pallet Company FIre Causes Mutual Aid Call

AT 7:51 PM Tuesday a rapidly spreading fire was reported at the Hastings Pallet Company in an outside storage area. Fire Fighters arrived to find flames 50-60'tall licking at neighboring buildings. The fire was intense and gave off a tremendous amount of radiant heat. It melted windows on neighboring building and caused the brick to spall on the buildings in several places.

On arrival Capt Clark and Engine 2 set up heavy streams to attack the fire fromn the west a 2 1/2" line was advanced to provide a cover spray on the building.

Engine 3's and Lt Vorderstrasse began an attack on the south with a ground set monitor and then advanced lines into the building. The found minor extension in the building and placed hand lines inside for protection.

An early call was placed for additonal help as early as the first encode. All units answered up quickly and a call for a backup crew was made immediately. On arrival Chief Gilbert requested mutual aid from BLue Hill, Juniata, Hastings Rural and Doniphan. Red Cloud Fire fighters heard the call up and also responded.

The fire was impacting against a large abandoned factory known as Marshalltown
Instruments. It melted windows there but additional lines were placed to protect it. This fire had the potential to rapidly spread and involve several buildings at one time. A strong north wind increased the risk.

There were no fire fighters injured. A twenty pound propane bottle was found in the center of the burned area. Forunately it did not create a BLEVE (boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion).

An area of pallets appxomatley 50' by 75' and 12 feet tall were consumed in a short amount of time.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

A new member joined the Hastings Fire Department in February of this year. His name is Eric Pohlson. He has had a love for the fire service since he can remember. The last ten years Eric has been a member of the Kenesaw Nebraska Volunteer Fire Department. Kenesaw is straight west of Hastings about 15 miles, and it is the Hastings area mutual aid district. Eric grew up in Hastings so he feels like he knows what to somewhat expect within the city of Hastings. Eric has a great love for the fire service, but spending time with his family is his favorite thing to do on his days off. His wife Jennifer is a school teacher in the area, and he has a daughter Kailee who is 7 in first grade, and a son John who will start Kindergarden next Fall.

Fire Fighter's Implement use of LRV

Hastings fire fighters respond quicker today using light rescue vehicles (LRV)to medical emergencies. On medical emergencies our fire fighters first determine from the information given by the dispatcher whether the response justifies additional staff should be sent to assist our local ems private provider. Traditionally a Heavy Rescue Truck or fire engine was dispatched. However an increasing call load, increasing wear and increased cost to own and operate these vehicles caused the department to reevaluate how it responds.Today fire fighters can choose to respond to medical emergencies by smaller, more agile and quicker response vehicles. Those vehicles include a 4X4 pick up and a Ford Crown Victoria.Hastings Fire fighters respond to about one/third of the calls that our private medical provider is dispatched to. Total yearly incidents are about 1,600 of which 900 are typically medicals. The two thirds of the private provider calls the fire department does not respond to are minor medical or assist calls.Fire Fighters are aware and automatically respond to addresses known to have special needs for assistance or additional manpower. It is believed that the use of the LRVs will assit fire fighters in providing our customers quicker, efficient and cost effective service.
