CREATION & PURPOSE
     The Hastings Fire Department Reserves was created with the goal to limit the amount of damage whether it is property or life, by providing an adequate, well-trained response of suppression forces for major emergencies.  The Reserve Department shall provide an immediate manpower pool in addition to the on-duty forces.
     Under the supervision of the paid regular fire department to respond to fire alarms and other emergency calls to protect life and property, to attend training sessions and to do related work as required.

FIRE CALLS & RESPONSES
      Hastings Firefighters Reserves may be paged for any emergency requiring their assistance.  Members having their appropriate protective gear shall report to the fire station or the fire scene whichever is the closest place and report to the officer-in-charge for assignment.  Response to paged fire calls will be determined by paid senior officers.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
     Response to alarms and follow instructions of paid officers in the laying of hose lines and raising ladders, extinguishment or overhaul operation, participate in training sessions and drills, participate in standby situations when potential problems deem  necessary.

KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
     Ability to learn theory and principles of modern fire protection, ability to apply knowledge gained in training to practical operation of fire prevention and suppression tasks, ability to study training material, maps and diagrams, ability to adopt a quick, reasonable and effective course of action under emergency conditions, ability to establish and maintain effective relations with others.

SELECTION PROCEDURES OF NEW MEMBERS
    A background check by the Fire Chief of the Hastings Fire & Rescue Dept. and Chief of the Reserves Dept. is required.  Upon approval of the background check, all applicants meeting the special requirements will be invited to take part in an oral examination before a panel of the Hastings Fire Department Reserves Officers for final approval.  A current valid Nebraska Drivers License issued without restrictions is required.
